  abstract      = {The security of passwords is a concern for administrators and users of operating systems. To encrypt passwords in Unix a modified DES algorithm is used. In the paper we present this modification. As the result of the use of such a cipher we obtain a 11 character string plus a two-character "salt". This method is difficult to decrypt. It is implemented in software and the program Szperacz is presented here. It can help administrators of systems to control weak passwords and select accounts that can be broken.}
