  abstract      = {The goal of this paper is to show the increasing relevance of so-called „public key cryptography” in business information systems, and especially in financial applications. Contrary to conventional cryptography, public key cryptography makes (financial) transactions secure, without requiring that the parties involved share any secret in common. This unique feature allows a banking card to prove its genuineness to a point of sale, a company to transfer electronic funds to a bank, or a customer to pay on-line a service to a merchant, by using very flexible procedures and minimizing the requirements on the tamper-resistance of the devices used. It is very likely that public key will deeply penetrate real life in the coming years- including our pockets, since it will reach all the banking cards no later than 2000 or 2002... }
