  abstract      = {Traditional method for data and process modeling are sufficient for information systems implemented in an environment of passive database management systems. They are not satisfactory for applications that require dynamic, time- and event- dependent control over their processes. The commonly used methodologies which are data- or function-oriented are inadequate. Thus, a new mechanism with deductive properties, called active rule, has been developed. This paper shows how a class of time- dependent business rules may be incorporated into a relational database system. An extensions to the relational data model is discussed and a method for specification and detection of composite events is proposed.}
