  abstract      = {Metadata support for data warehouse systems is cru-cial for setting up a successful supply chain for decision relevant information. While organisational aspects are very important, metadata management  depends also on a software infrastructure for extracting, integrating, storing and delivering metadata. Such a software architecture is usually centered around a metadata repository and ought to be seamlessly integrated with the data warehouse ar-chitecture. User requirements and constraints created by an existing data warehouse architecture led us to a con-ceptual architecture for metadata management that is based on a common shared metamodel covering all as-pects of data warehousing. The resulting architecture that was developed for the data warehousing environment at a leading Swiss financial services group shows that concep-tual similarities between metadata management and data warehousing help to identify and understand the basic requirements for a metadata management system.}
