  abstract      = {In a functional approach, XML data is typed as functions. We introduce a version of the typed λ-calculus (with tagged terms) as a framework for manipulating typed XML data. Such a language, we call it LT (language of terms), has sound semantics and it is extendible with various application functions, e.g. arithmetical operations, aggregation functions, logical functions, text similarities, etc. An XML-schema is a collection of typed variables of LT and an associated XML database is their valuation. The language XML-λ provides only syntactical sugar for LT. We present XML-λ as a query language over XML objects. Due to its extendibility, we can obtain various classes of query languages having e.g. the power of relational calculus, regular path expressions, approximate matching, etc. The results obtained by querying are either XML data or other data structures, e.g. relations, nested tables, etc. We present a formal framework for XML-λ, including a collection of examples of queries in XML-λ, and compare them with some recent XML query languages.}
