  abstract      = {In this paper we offer a method to determine whether your distributed application in a large-scale networking environment produces the required throughput or not, whether it scales up well or whether it is better to change one of its key components. We introduce discrete event driven simulation as a supplementary solution for benchmarking in performance evaluation. Prior to deployment, you can now assess the overall throughput and scalability of your system in various use cases and various environments without large-scale installation and configuration needs. Due to the high costs of assembling large-scale systems, and to the possibly wide geographical area of the targeted network, developers and operators may benefit from the usage of such a tool. In this paper we sum up the characteristics of object oriented middleware, and give a short description of the most popular techniques. It is described how to adopt a general simulation model to the properties of an actual system, and guidelines are given on special considerations. Illustrating the method, measurement results and experience are presented for two widely used paradigms without involving the need for comparison. Concluding remarks point to usability and restruction issues.}
