  abstract      = {In the context of Information Filtering and Retrieval the usage of pre-processing steps like Stopword-list, Stemming and Thesaurus Substitution is very common. Indeed the usage of those pre-processing steps seems to be sound at the first look; formal proofs for the adequacy of those steps are still absent. In this paper those proofs are given with the assistance of the Topic-based Vector Space Model. Additionally the hidden implicit assumptions of the above mentioned pre-processing steps are worked out and evaluated regarding their impact on practical usage.}
