  abstract      = {This paper presents an ontology-driven, multi-agent system that addresses a series of decision making issues arising in the management of freight transportation transactions. The proposed system formulates automatically alternative transportation routes, and facilitates their evaluation through a dynamic consideration of the available carriers’ services and the customer’s profile and preferences. Its underlying ontology model is based on semantics extracted from the freight transportation literature and interviews with potential users, and provides the means to efficiently accomplish tasks related to information modelling and sharing, communication between the parties involved, and coordination of activities that support the underlying decision making.}
