  abstract      = {This paper discusses the applicability of a recently highly discussed process algebra, the pi-calculus, as a foundation for Business Process Management (BPM). We therefore investigate the pi-calculus from a technical viewpoint based on current work in this area. The paper summarizes shifting requirements and discusses the evolving theories behind BPM from the past over state–of–the–art to the future. The concepts and theories are concluded by an illustrating example highlighting why the pi-calculus is a promising foundation for future BPM.}
