Information Systems
Poznan Poland 20-22 April 2005
On April 20-22 The Poznan University of Economics hosted
the 8th International Conference on Business Information Systems
2005. The conference aimed at discussion of the development,
implementation, application and improvement of computer systems
for business applications.
During three conference days more than 80 delegates, mostly
from the USA, Poland, Germany, Canada, Australia but also
from other countries including Greece, Finland, Slovak Republic,
Ukraine and Kuwait, deliberated on topics of e-government,
e-learning, utilization of ontologies, mobile technologies
and others. BIS 2005 was addressed to scientists, industry
experts, government institutions, international organizations,
specialists in theoretical and applied informatics, managers,
consultants, and students and representatives of these groups
were participating in the conference.
The papers presented during the BIS 2005 conference were reviewed
by the international programme committee which consists of
top researchers coming from 31 countries. The acceptance
rate of the papers was about 40%.
The conference started from an inauguration keynote speaker
lecture “The Harmonised Messaging Technology connects
Web Services” held by Prof. Maria Orlowska from The
University of Queensland, Australia.
During the conference, participants had possibility to hear
other interesting keynote speaches held by: Volker Gruhn from
University of Leipzig, Germany on Utilization of Mobile Technologies,
Edward Szczerbicki from University of Newcastle, Australia,
on Information Management, Gregory E. Kersten from Concordia
University, Canada, on E-Negotiation Systems and Wolfgang
Nebel from Oldenburg University, Germany on Objectives and
Strategies for Small and Medium Size Research Institutes.
Interesting discussions took place during two panel sessions
held on topics of e-government (moderator: Gertraud Peinel
from FIT, Germany) and the future of ontologies (moderator:
Maria E. Orlowska, University of Queensland, Australia).
The conference was supported by partners of three european
projects (ASG, enIRaF and USE-ME.GOV). Thanks to the cooperation
with the ASG Project, participants could get acquainted with
the idea of BPM Environments (tutorial held by representatives
of Rodan S.A., Poland) and also Web Services-based Information
Systems. The ASG project co-organised a session that involved
participants from the ASG PhD Programme and resulted with
fruitfull discussions.
An internal project meeting of the ASG (Adapitve Services
Grid) project was held during the conference. There were about
20 participants of the two-days’ meeting, and they represented
different components of the ASG platform. From component C-1
(ASG Interface), through C-2 (Service Discovery & Composition),
C-4 (Adaptive Process Management) to C-7 (Usability and demonstration).
The main topics of the meeting included discussions and agreement
making on current phases of research, along with making decision
on future actions. Meeting partners also prepared a presentation
oncurrently used technologies for BIS conference participants.
Two days before the BIS conference the Poznan University of
Economics hosted also the USE-ME.GOV project meeting, during
which partners from Portugal, Spain, Germany, France, Italy
and Poland discussed important technological choices for the
implementation, as well as for validation and exploitation
phase of the project.
The conference and all the side events were organized by the
Department of Management Information Systems of The Poznan
University of Economics. It was supported by the Colorado
Institute for Technology Transfer and Implementation (CTTI),
Council of European Professional Informatics Societies (CEPIS)
and Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI). Assistance was
also contributed from sponsors like Microsoft, Emax, Zeto
Poznan, the International Poznan Fair, and media patrons (Bankier.pl,
Gazeta IT, Magazyn Systemy IT).
