Workshop on Ontology Evolution (OnE 2007)
in conjunction with10th International Conference on Business Information Systems BIS 2007in co-operation with ACM SIGMIS
Poznan, PolandApril 25, 2007
Deadline for submissions: February 18, 2007

Change is one of the few constants in the world that surrounds us. As ontologies are used to conceptualize certain domains of this changing world, they should evolve accordingly to reflect the modified state of the domain or they become obsolete very quickly. Besides changing domains, other common factors that cause ontologies to evolve are corrections of design flaws, changing user- and business requirements, a shift of focus on a domain. Because ontologies are intended to be used by other ontologies and applications, and because they are often deployed in a highly decentralized environment such as the Web, the problem of ontology evolution is far from trivial. Consequences of changes don’t remain local to the ontology itself, but affect depending ontologies and applications as well, possibly resulting in failing applications or applications with an unexpected behaviour.

Due to the complexity of ontology evolution, a manual and ad-hoc management of ontology evolution is not feasible. This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners with different research backgrounds and interests working on aspects related to the problem of ontology evolution (e.g., change discovery, consistency management, temporal knowledge representation, temporal queries, visualisation of ontology changes, collaborative development). The ultimate goal is to facilitate the discussion of key issues, approaches, open problems, innovative applications, and trends in these research areas.
