It is our pleasure to invite you to participate in the tutorial on use of an innovative tool for in-memory processing – SAP HANA. Tutorial is one day long (4 sessions in total) and will be held on Thursday, June 20th. The instructors require that participants attend all sessions (all exercises are closely integrated). Tutorial is free of charge for BIS participants as well as for academia and students (not includes participation in the BIS conference, catering and conference materials).



Tutorial Program


Part 1 – Introduction to in-memory computing (SAP HANA)

Theoretical part (about 60 minutes)

  • How we can imagine in-memory computing?
  • Tuple reconstruction, benefits from columnar storage
  • Data persistency
  • Data provisioning
  • Modeling
  • Hardware for HANA (CISCO example)

Practical part (about 30 minutes)

    Using SAP HANA tools:
  • SAP HANA studio – quick intro, connection to SAP HANA
  • SAP Predictive Analysis – quick intro, connection to SAP HANA
  • MS Office – quick intro, connection to SAP HANA
  • Internet Explorer - quick intro, connection to SAP HANA

Part 2 – Loading Data with SAP Data Services

Theoretical part

    Short introduction to SAP Data Services
  • Introduction to ETL process
  • Acquiring data from a data source
  • Transfer data to target database

Practical part

  • Designing ETL jobs
  • Loading data from source to target SAP HANA database

Part 3 – Data Modeling with SAP HANA Studio

Theoretical part

    Short introduction to SAP HANA Studio
  • Introduction to data warehouses
  • Modeling dimension tables as Attribute Views
  • Modeling data as Analytic Views
  • Modeling data as Calculation Views
  • Analytic Privileges

Practical part

  • Executing simple queries
  • Creating Attribute Views and Analytic View
  • Creating Calculation View using SQL Script
  • Data Preview of the views

Part 4 – Data Mining with SAP Predictive Analysis

Theoretical part

    Short introduction to SAP Predictive Analysis
  • Acquiring data from a data source
  • Preparing the data for analysis (for example, by filtering the data)
  • Appling algorithms
  • Presenting results
  • Storing the results for further analysis

Practical part

  • Solving business cases
